Parliamentary Questions: When will the report on the asbestos policy review be published?

A series of Parliamentary questions have asked when the asbestos policy review will be published. They were tabled by Annette Brooke MP Chair of AiS, Chris Leslie MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Toby Perkins MP Shadow Minister for Small Business and Kevin Brennan MP Shadow Schools Minister.

Comment: It is understood that the Schools Minister, David Laws MP, is working hard to have the review published. He has answered a series of Parliamentary questions has indicated in them all that it will be published before the General Election.  If it is not, it can only be concluded that  other Ministers have prevented its publication.

The Schools Minister, David Laws MP responses are as follows:

23rd February   “No date has yet been set for the publication of the review report but we intend to publish it very shortly.”
27th January “The Department has undertaken a review of its policy on asbestos in schools, the results of which will be published shortly.”
15th January : “The Department for Education currently expects to provide an update on the management of asbestos in schools before the end of February 2015.”
8th January: “We will provide an update on the management of asbestos in schools shortly.”
5th December: “We will provide an update on the management of asbestos in schools in the new year.”

Asked by Toby Perkins Department for Education Schools: Asbestos 221609
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what her Department's policy is on the use of asbestos in school buildings.

The use of asbestos in buildings in the UK was banned in 1999 and as such should not be used in the construction of new buildings. Existing asbestos in school buildings should be managed in line with the regulations set in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. To help schools manage any asbestos present in schools the Department for Education currently publishes guidance, which is available online at this link:
