Asbestos being removed from schools

A three-phase programme has been drawn up for the removal of asbestos
products from state schools, Education Minister Dolores Cristina has
told parliament.

She explained that items made of asbestos are currently not being used
or are not accessible to students, and therefore they do not
constitute an immediate danger.

Answering a parliamentary question by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo, Mrs
Cristina said the first removal phase had been set under way during
this summer’s holidays, while children were not at school.

The Minister last week said in reply to another parliamentary question
that a number of schools had asbestos water tanks, some of which are
used to water plants.
